The Government of Saint Lucia, through the Department of Commerce, will convene the National Insurance Discussion on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at the studio of the National Television Network, bringing together key stakeholders to examine the state of the insurance market and chart a more inclusive, resilient path forward for citizens and the economy.
This discussion comes at a pivotal time, as Saint Lucia continues to confront the compounding impacts of climate change, rising global costs, and growing vulnerabilities across households, businesses, and critical productive sectors. Increasingly frequent and severe weather events, coupled with global pressures such as rising reinsurance costs and reduced market capacity, have placed significant strain on the local insurance landscape.
An estimated 80 percent of homes in Saint Lucia remain uninsured and underinsured, largely due to high premiums, costly deductibles, limited product accessibility, and gaps in public understanding and trust. These realities pose serious socioeconomic risks and undermine national resilience in the face of future shocks.
Against this backdrop, the discussion will go beyond premiums and policies. Discussions will focus on barriers to access, public awareness and attitudes toward insurance, and the evolving role of Government in fostering a more affordable, inclusive, and sustainable insurance sector.
The National Insurance Dialogue is expected to generate practical insights and collaborative solutions aimed at strengthening consumer protection, improving access to coverage, and enhancing Saint Lucia’s overall economic resilience.
